Domaine Hubert Lignier “Six Generations”

With roots dating back to 1880, Domaine Hubert Lignier is a true legendary domaine of Burgundy. The Domaine owns over eight hectares, principally in Morey St. Denis where their home and cellars are located, with land under vine also in Gevrey Chambertin and Chambolle Musigny. Hubert’s son, Laurent, is the 5th generation of this proud estate, committed to following the traditional practices passed down by his father. Laurent, and now his son, Sebastien, who only recently joined operations at the Domaine, ensure that the treasures emanating from their family’s vineyards continue to exhibit the true essence of their appellation.

2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Score: 92-94 | Tasted: Jan 10, 2021 | Drink: 2031+ | Issue: 81
This too displays a vague whiff of volatile acidity but it's sufficiently subtle as to essentially be a non-issue on the earthy aromas of dark currant and plum. There is beguiling energy to the delineated and focused middle weight flavors that are not as concentrated but, somewhat surprisingly, they are finer thanks to the fine-grained tannins shaping the mildly austere and sneaky long finish. Note that my projected range assumes that the VA will remain at its presently very low level.
2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Score: 92-95 | Tasted: Jan 10, 2021 | Drink: 2034+ | Issue: 81
A mildly toasty and ripe nose features notes of plum liqueur, red cherry, plum and a plentitude of spice elements. The succulent and more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors possess both good richness and a sophisticated mouthfeel before culminating in a sneaky long, compact and built-to-age finish that carries its elevated alcohol surprisingly well.
2019 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes
Score: 91-94 | Tasted: Jan 10, 2021 | Drink: 2031+ | Issue: 81 | Sweet spot Outstanding
A ripe, spicy and fresh nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry and floral top notes. The middle weight flavors are rich to the point of opulence while offering equally good length if not the same robust power on the balanced and slightly less structured finale. This too is one to consider.
2019 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru "Les Chaffots"
Score: 91-94 | Tasted: Jan 10, 2021 | Drink: 2034+ | Issue: 81 | Sweet spot Outstanding
A much earthier nose offers up notes of poached plum, warm earth, dark currant and a whiff of the sauvage. The intense big-bodied flavors possess a surprisingly polished mouthfeel along with good detail on the robust, muscular and powerful finish that displays excellent length. As is typically the case, this is very serious and a wine that will require extended cellaring to shed its carapace of firm tannins. One to strongly consider.
2019 Morey Saint Denis “Trilogie”
Score: 89-92 | Tasted: Jan 10, 2021 | Drink: 2027+ | Issue: 81 | Outstanding Top value
Moderate reduction knocks down the fruit though it does appear ripe. Interestingly given the very low yields, the medium-bodied flavors are quite fine if not especially dense while offering good detail and focus on the impressively intense finish that really fans out as it sis on the palate. Once again, Lignier delivers with his villages level wines in 2019 as this is excellent.
2019 Gevrey Chambertin Les Seuvrées
Score: 90-92 | Tasted: Jan 10, 2021 | Drink: 2027+ | Issue: 81 | Outstanding Top value
Aromas of ripe plum, spice, damp earth and the sauvage are trimmed in admirably discreet wood. There is fine richness and volume to the sleek, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors that are quite saline in character, all wrapped in a relatively powerful, palate coating and long if mildly rustic finish. This too is an impressive villages and recommended.
