A manificently fresh and wonderfully broad nose features notes of spice, black currant, sandalwood, smoke, game, earth and violets. The dense, serious, intense and muscular big-bodied flavors possess a highly appealing texture as the palate staining finish is ultra-seductive as well as spectacularly persistent. This is a wonderfully intense and potent effort that should age effortlessly for decades yet there is so much dry extract present that even in magnum format this could be enjoyed young though I am certainly not recommending it as the development potential here is nothing short of amazing.

The 2009 Clos St. Denis is also stellar and again very much like the opulent and black fruity 1985 version. The bouquet offers up a sappy mix of black cherries, dark berries, bitter chocolate, venison, herb tones, a touch of bonfire and a beautifully complex base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very opulent in the traditional Ponsot style, with a sappy core, fine-grained tannins and superb length and grip on the complex and endless finish. Fine juice.

Very dark. Much more life than the Chambertin at this address although it is still hedonistically sweet! Purple berries and not that much structure yet. Lots of pleasure though. Fine boned and pretty strong statement, good raciness on the start. Planted in 1905.
