1999 stands out as a top vintage for Red Burgundy, delivering both quality and quantity. Some Burgundy devotees consider it the best vintage since 1978. The 1999’s have a great combination of concentrated fruit, balanced acidity, and terroir distinction. Exceptional wines were produced throughout the Cote d’Or, with standout performances from Volnay, Pommard, Chambolle-Musigny, and Vosne-Romanée. Cool weather combined with spikes of heat and rain characterized much of the 1999 growing season. Spring delivered warm and dry weather which made for a successful flowering. Bouts of rain and cooler weather resumed into late June, providing ample water reserves for the vines. Hot and dry weather continued through to harvest, producing a large, healthy crop of grapes. The resulting 1999 wines are profoundly rich and slow to mature. They should be reaching their peek at twenty-five years, so don’t miss the chance to experience these beauties at the perfect time.
