The history of Rayas dates back to 1880, when it was founded by Albert Reynaud. The first vintage, crafted by Albert’s son Louis, was produced in 1920. The Domaine expanded in 1945 with the purchase of Domaine des Tours, along with twelve hectares of Fonsalette. Around this time, Louis placed his son Bertram in charge. When Louis passed away in 1978, the estate was divided: his younger son Jacques inherited Rayas and Fonsalette, while Bertram was awarded Domaine des Tours, which was later passed down to his son Emmanuel. Following Jacques’ passing in 1997, Rayas was also entrusted to Emmanuel, who was already operating Domaine des Tours in Vacqueyras.

This revered estate remains somewhat of a mystery—its unmarked building is notoriously difficult to find, making it all the more remarkable that one of the world’s most distinctive and sought-after wines is produced there. The thirteen hectares of north-facing slopes, shaded by forests in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, benefit from a cooler microclimate. The soil is sand over marl and clay, distinct from the famous galet stones found elsewhere in the region.

Jacques learned from his father that the key to unlocking Grenache’s full potential lies in severely restricting yields—no more than ten to fifteen hectoliters per hectare—a practice that Emmanuel continues today. Both Rayas and Pignan are produced exclusively from 100% Grenache, with Rayas sourced from the estate’s oldest vines. The wines are made in a traditional, minimalist style: there is no destemming, whole bunches undergo maceration and fermentation in concrete without temperature control.
