Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, this illustrious domaine was then passed to Georges’ son Jean-Marie and, since 1992, has been run by Jean-Marie’s son Christophe. Nestled in Chambolle Musigny, adjacent to Mugnier’s Château de Chambolle-Musigny, the domaine initially secured a tiny parcel of Musigny through a metayage agreement, which Jean-Marie eventually acquired outright in 1978. The 1950’s was a time of expansion for the already beloved domaine, acquiring parcels in Bonnes Mares, Clos de Vougeot, and the monopole Clos de la Bussière in Morey 1er. Additionally, Jean-Marie's wife, Odile Ponnelle, purchased a parcel of Corton-Charlemagne in 1968. In 1977, a metayage agreement with Michel Bonnefond facilitated the acquisition of parcels in Ruchottes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin. Both wines are made by Domaine Roumier with half the production under the Michel Bonnefond label and the other half labeled Domaine Roumier.

Renowned for producing what is considered the greatest Amoureuses, Domaine Roumier epitomizes excellence and tradition in Burgundy winemaking. The winemaking approach is non-interventionalist, focusing on elegance and terroir distinction. Yields are kept low, and the wines are destemmed (except for the Musigny). A combination of stainless-steel and concrete open-top tanks is used for fermentation following a short pre-fermentation cold soak. New oak is used sparingly to allow the terroir to shine through. Christophe freely admits that his wines need time to reach their full potential, but when they do, it can be argued that Domaine Roumier stands among the very greatest domaines in Burgundy.
